Brakes are the single most important
safety component in your car. Any sign of problems (eg.
dash light indicator flashing or on) - an inspection
should be completed by a specialist immediately.
Other
signs could be when your vehicle:
-
Loses grip when braking
-
Doesn't travel in a straight line
during braking
-
Brake pedal feels hard, soft,
spongy or is too low
-
Steering wheel shakes during
braking
-
Brakes are noisy - screech or
squeal
-
Takes longer than usual to stop
There are many important components
that make up a brake and it's operation - each part is
equally important to ensure operation and safety.
Brake Components
The disc rotor is attached to the
wheel assembly - when braking, the brake pad is pushed
against the disc to slow the vehicle. Braking begins
with pressure on the brake pedal which forces brake
fluid to push the brake pad.
The all important brake pad is
mounted to a brake calliper - comprising of a housing
containing a piston that moves back and forth when
pressure (from the pedal) is applied. Rubber parts
inside the calliper ensure that hydraulic fluid does not
leak from it.
Typical Brake Services
-
Comprehensive brake inspection to
check all the components of your brake system
-
It is often appropriate and safer
to overhaul callipers in axle sets (pairs) as this
may result in more balanced braking & extend brake
pad life.
-
The disc rotor occasionally
requires machining to ensure a smooth service -
allowing for smoothly and more efficient braking
